Just for fun. :-)
This is a fairly well-known exercise, but if you haven't seen it, it can be mind boggling. :-)
Punctuate the following to make it grammatically correct.
Peter while Paul had had had had had had had had had had had a better response from the instructor.
Answer in a couple of days unless one of you gets it first. :-)

Peter, while Paul had, had had, had, had had, had had a better response from the instructor. You're kidding, right? LOL
ReplyDeletePeter, while Paul, stuttered a lot!
ReplyDeleteHeh, heh, heh. This was part of a copyediting test. There were a few folks who recognized it right away. I wasn't one of them. :-(
ReplyDeleteYou're on the right track, Elizabeth, and Jude...yup :-)
Peter, while Paul had had “had,” had had “had had”; “Had had” had had a better response from the instructor.
ReplyDeleteExcept without that unnecessary capital. I had a period first. : )
ReplyDeleteI say somebody needs to rewrite that sentence!
ReplyDeleteYay, Casey. :-)
ReplyDeleteBish, yes, rewriting a sentence is often the best way to avoid awkward or overwhelming punctuation.
Less is best, methinks. :-)
I'll post tonight with the both the UK and North American versions, but Casey has it. :-)
